2004
NZ continued on from their wins in the Thomas & Uber Cup
Prelims last week to beat Australia 4-1 in the final match of the Oceania Teams
Event.
NZ had an unsually shaky start with World Championship semi finalists Daniel
Shirley and Sara Runesten Pedersen going down to Travis Denney and Kate Wilson
Smith in 2 sets. NZ then took control with husband and wife team Geoff and
Rebecca Bellingham winning mens and ladies singles. Rebecca proved too strong
for the doubles player Kellie Lucas, while Geoff had yet another tough and firey
battle with Stuart Brehaut. Both won in 2 sets.
NZ mens doubles combination of Daniel Shirley and John Gordon overcame a strong
challenge by Travis Denney and Ashley Brehaut, while NZ womens pair of Nicole
Gordon and Sara Runsten Pedersen regained dominance over the higher world ranked
pair of Kate Wilson Smith and Kellie Lucas.
Players will now compete in the Oceania Individual Championships at North
Harbour Badminton Stadium.
Fiji holt sich die Bronzemedaille.
Fighting for 3rd place Fiji took on New Caledonia in a rematch
of the 2003 South Pacific Games final.
Both teams had new members and were also up against a very loud NZ &
Australian crowd supporting their teams on the next court. The matches were all
tight with the closest being the ladies doubles. Fiji youngsters, Andra
Whiteside and Alissa Dean overcame sisters Valerie and Cecile Sarengat in a very
close 3 game thriller, setting up the mixed doubles as the decider.
Karen Whiteside had earlier put Fiji on the scoreboard with a convincing win
over Johanna Koh, while New Caledonian singles player Marc Antione Desaymoz won
over Burty Molia.
The mens doubles games was a quick one, with Fiji player Damien Ah Sam going
down with a knee injury and withdrawing from the game.
This meant that the mixed doubles would be the decider. A rematch of the Fiji
International mixed doubles final, this time the Fiji pair of Karyn Whiteside
and Burty Molia would get revenge over Valerie Sarengat and Fabien Kaddour.
Fiji the final winners 3-2. A match played in front of a large crowd all
appreciating the great games.
